MSc Student at the University of Saskatchewan

Hello! Cassidy Waldrep here.

You might be wondering…why has this student created an aesthetically looking website that encompasses who she is as a scientist but also provides resources for young scientists?

Not only is this website a place where I can promote my research and provide fellow STEM lovers a place to contact me, but I want it to be a place of education, learning, and accessibility. The STEM field can sometimes feel cold. From the outside, it might seem like we’re a bunch of nerds that curl up in our labs and never have contact with the outside world. Sometimes I think my emotions are too much - I’ve been known to cry when I see ducks. It’s hard because I’ve never seen that type of emotion from scientists before. But, as I’m sure you feel, the STEM world is incredible. I get so much joy from coding, learning about animal behavior, and sharing what I can with my family (when they listen that is…). The passion I have for my waterfowl research is through the roof. And I never, ever, want to hide them from anyone. I want you to know that those passions and excitements are valued in science and I think as a scientific community, we need to be better at accepting that. I want this website to start changing the narrative.

I’ve had to figure some things out myself along the way. How should I apply to a college that focuses on research? How do I find a research lab (undergraduate or PhD)? How do I start learning R for free? Should I even learn how to code (the answer is yes!!!!)? To answer all of these questions, I dove deep into the web and 1 million google searches later, I kind of have some of it figured out - and that is what I want to share with the public. Why gatekeep my knowledge when knowledge can be used for so much good? My goal is to encourage students to follow their STEM dreams by giving them the opportunity to learn from me, even though I’m extremely young in the field right now. So, please explore this website as I pursue my career as a scientist. I want it to be joy-giving, guiding, and beneficial. I hope you can at least take away some bits and pieces to help you out.
